Animals Are Beautiful People, the debut 7-inch vinyl single from Run Return (Tommy Fugelsang, Kevin Dineen, and Raj Ojha), features two fine samplings from the instrumental outfit's forthcoming album Metro North. Established in 1999 in Santa Cruz, California, the trio produces a loose, retro-future hybrid of experimental post-rock and spacey electronica that augments digital processing with the natural sounds of drums, vibes, guitars, and other instruments. The title song begins with industrial clatter before settling into a slow-motion, synth-washed lurch of dubbed-out, hazy calm, a minimal bass line the glue holding the piece together, while electronic glissandi flutter, swoop, and writhe over skuzzy, head-nodding beats and an undertow of dark bass burble in "Mercury Retrograde." Be forewarned: only 500 copies of the gleaming orange disc were pressed.

i'm not really a music journalist My true calling is making up genres to write on the plastic cards at SF's Open Mind Music record store. I've already got "Haircut2000" for all the new electro-punk records, and Run_Return inspired the first "Warm Fuzzy" section! Lazy, happy music for hallucinatory afternoons and foggy 4 a.m.s.

A two-track 7-inch that proceeds the Metro North full-length, this orange slab of vinyl - limited to 500 copies - shifts n5MD slightly away from the Skam-style electronics of earlier releases. While Run_Return still owes a clear debt to Boards of Canada, the threesome mixes in some live drums, first stomping and then rolling off into a gentile groove on the A-side. The flip-side "Mercury Retrograde" starts out with some SID-cip chattering and flanged guitar before it settles into it's wistful vintage=style synth washes and fluttering percussion. If you need a quick fix before BoC drops it's new album in Oct, you could do a lot worse.

70’s aesthetics always come, too. And the ticky-tack drums and syrupy tempos of that decade are what make Bay-Area trio Run_return’s heart pound. They might not have on their Can T-shirts, but these are futurists looking backwards. On their dumb hot 7” single, “Animas are Beautiful People” (N5MD), they beautifully suffer from Anticon-itis with laptop instrumentals that are lush, trashy and yet melodic-something they share with like-minded eggheads Subltle. “Mercury Retrograde” throws slinky synthesizers against complicated drumming (both fake and oh so real), making dancefloors out of computer screens.

Two tracks to tease your brain, Run_Return's 7" orange vinyl release is a blast of post-rock instrumental programming augmented by a welter of live instrumentation that hums with hints of Tortoise and Telefon Tel Aviv without leaving any linger sense of being a pale imitation of either. Anchored by three guys with their fingers on all sorts of strings, triggers and percussion, Run_Return charms with its enthusiasm for textured nuances that meld future jazz with IDM, post-rock with orchestral visitations and ambient innocence with squelchy frisson.

A-side "Animals Are Beautiful People" roars into being with a clatter of percussion and an echo of voices like a stampede of escaping zoo animals. As the laconic melodies weave into a soundscape that boasts the warm light and heat of indolent summers, we can only sink into the waves of sound as if we were being carried away on the backs of gamboling animals. B-side "Mercury Retrograde" (a non-album track) hums with digitized voices, earnest synths and a room full of percussion, both live and binary. Laying bare Run_Return's fascination with rhythms -- both living and fabricated -- this track is 21st century body mood music: made for the soul, intriguing for the head and intoxicating for the body.
