Arc Lab

An amalgam of disparate stylistic influences, Arc Lab was initially conceived by Medard Fischer as a means by which to indulge his musings on the interplay between structurally-defined space and musical expression. The name Arc Lab is derived from his love of architecture, more specifically his appreciation of the arch and its aural cousin the sine wave. Fischer quickly outgrew his original sonic mandate, and the Arc Lab project has become much more eclectic over the last several years, adding vocals, a more melodious undercurrent and more acoustic elements. Fischer places a constant emphasis on melody and sound manipulation, his music is a delicate balance of tension and emotion which harnesses errant melodies, fractured percussion and granular synthesis experiments to make that all important musical connection with the listener. In 2005 Arc Lab released full-length CD "The Nineteen Floors" on Music Made by People (MMBP) as well as an EP on Duotone (JP) entitled "Collapse Group". 2006 saw the release of his second full length “No Spectre” (n5MD). “No Spectre” was a delicately illuminated beacon that was declared by some to be a perfect mix of Arovane, Deseptikon and Proem style IDM. In April 2008 n5MD will release “The Goodbye Radio” an album of 14 vignettes which feature much more of Fischer’s own voice and personal breath than previous Arc Lab releases. Genre specific sign-posts or “this-meets-that” descriptors are really of little use in describing “The Goodbye Radio” as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas.
